What comes to your mind when you see this?
Well, what comes to my mind is the fact that King Lear put through a test his daughters in order to see who of them love him the most, so in that way give the largest piece of his kingdom to the one who does.
Sadly, The King realized that he made a bad desicion, because after this incident a huge amount of events started, such as Goneril and Regan betraying his father just to obtain more possessions...and of course as in a variaty of Shakespeare´s plays....King Lear goes mad.
I wanted to talk about this because nowadays the same problem happens. Most of the time people "fall in love" or start a relationship with someone just to have money or other kind of facilities.
I was part of a similar situation; a few years ago I realized that I had incensere and greedy friends who hanged out with me just becasue I had things that they did not.
Based on that, I don not believe in words but FACTS, because they show people's real intentions.

I definitely agree with you, I had not read your post before, and I actually in mine I also mentioned briefly that words are diminished by actions, for sure.In King Lear, Regan and Goneril express beautifully their "love" to their father. On the other hand, Cordelia does not do the same, so Lear gets very angry. However, afterwards we would realize that words mean nothing, because the older daugthers were not able to show that love through actions, unlike Cordelia who was the only one who could do so. So, effectively, facts speak louder than words.

ResponderEliminarI do agree with the idea of bad decisions. However, I would like to go a little bit deeper; beyond monetary issues (or possessions); I think the chaos in King Lear is generated by the King’s inability to differentiate between his role as a father and his role as a sovereign. In fact, he decides to divide his kingdom and hand over power just to test his daughters, in other words, he is refusing his obligations as a leader, in order to have these demonstrations of affection. Then, he reacts as a king, not as a father, when he listens the responses of the three sisters; he is so used to be praised that he is incapable of recognizing a manifestation of true love.
ResponderEliminarI definitely agree with you. In the world that we live is very hard to tell who are our true friends and who are not. Therefore, I believe that sometimes even though we can't speak to our friends or family because life is complicated itself, we still have those moments of need that are when you really know who your true friends are, because "a friend in need, is a friends in deed". This made me remember the Merchant of Venice, when Portia's father made different test to know who was worthy of his daughter, I guess that we have to go through some test to prove our friendship, but more than words we have to demonstrate with facts and actions who we really are.
