Many people believe in ghosts, some of them confirmed that belief after
experiencing an extraordinary, creepy or unbelievable situation. Well, there
are plenty stories waiting to be heard, but unfortunately there is no evidence
to prove them real.
Shakespeare’s play “Hamlet” bases its plot in this phenomenon, Hamlet’s
dead father returns to claim for revenge!! Could it sound normal in this type
of tragedy, but some clues may make us believe that probably the only world in
which that ghost appeared was in Hamlet’s mind.
In popular stories we usually hear that relatives, who passed away,
sometimes return to make us a favor or to take care of us, but why Hamlet’s
father would ask him to commit a crime?
First of all, Hamlet as a Christian should not believe in ghosts, people
who died never come back again to the real world. One alternative is a demon
coming from hell using Hamlet’s father figure, but it’s hard to categorize the
nature of this character. On the other hand, the Catholic belief may refer to a
soul from the purgatory, but as they need good actions to have access to heaven
the ghost wouldn’t ask for a crime.
We cannot state the reality of the ghost as more than one character
actually saw the ghost, but we can assure that his role is important as a
guiding force throughout the play.
The importance of the lost paternal figure and the spontaneous marriage
between Claudius and Gertrude probably affected Hamlet’s mind, he showed this
antic-disposition, he acted like a mad person but probably, up to an extent, he
was really crazy because something was not running normally. So then this
justifies the act of Hamlet to returning all to normality and cutting out all
that was “rotten” in Denmark. So then the king would’ve been avenged.
HORATIO | Have after. To what issue will this come? |
MARCELLUS | Something is rotten in the state of Denmark. (I. iv) |
