That is what Shakespeare presents us in Twelfth Night with the story of Viola. Check out how she describes her secret crush to the guy of her dreams without revealing to him that he's the object of her affection:

Smiling at grief. Was not this love indeed?
This speech describes perfectly what is to keep a love a secret, especially when you are too afraid of accepting yourself to tell the truth. I think this is the main point of everything. The reason why we keep having secret crushes is because we are insecure, because we're afraid they won't love us back if they know who we really are, or maybe is because we think that we are not good enough for the person, but let me tell you something WE ARE GOOD ENOUGH!
I'm convinced that if Viola got the guts to disguised herself as a man, she could have said the truth to Orsino from the beginning; she was definitely a woman with the qualities of a winner, the only problem was that she lived in a society that undervalued this characteristics in a woman which made her believed that she wasn't good enough and played an imposed role.
It is time to tell the Orsinos out there that we like them, it is time to stop hiding who we really are, and it is time to stop playing roles and pretending to be who we are not!

ResponderEliminarBut talking about the main topic of your post, having a crush on someone is not something easy to live with. As you said, it requires courage and confidence in that, whatever happens, everything is going to be okay at the end.
But most of the times we know things are not going to be okay at the end. In fact, most people prefer to keep things as they are, because loving someone who does not love you back is useless. People tend to keep relationships calm for the sake of communal peace, since a love declaration has only two possible results: love and happiness, or separation and desolation.
I sincerely prefer to be quite sure my crush loves me back before making a love declaration. Taking too many risks is irresponsible, you know.
And well, that is why I won't post my crush's name here, hahah.

ResponderEliminarUnfortunatelly, there are lots of people that are still being insecure about themselves and allowing society to turn them off. According to your entry, this situation has been happening for a long long time, but I don´t like the idea of thinking of people as a group, because we are all different. For instance, if I had a crush with someone, I´d tell her... but some people would not do it...
Do you think that it is important to previously determine if that person would accept you or not? I think the same as you... WE ARE ALL GOOD ENOUGH! and if your crush doesn´t know that... you´ve got to adjust the scope!
