Do love potions truly exist?

Do love potions truly exist?

As we have seen in Midsummer night’s Dream, love is one of the main themes of the play and it is closely related with the concept of magic. On one hand, love is represented in the play through the difficulties that Hermia, Lysander, Helena and Demetrius have to deal with. Hermia loves Lysander, Lysander loves Hermia; Helena loves Demetrius, but Demetrius loves Hermia instead of her. We can also include here is the relationship between Oberon and Titania who are at odds over a young Indian prince. On the other hand, we have magic that is used by the fairies to make someone fall in love with another person. Puck, Oberon’s jester, is sent by Oberon, who wanted to take revenge against Titania, to take a magical flower in order to use its juice as a love potion. When Puck mistakenly drops the potion over Lysander’s eyelids instead of Demetrius’ and later he also drops the potion over Demetrius’ eyelids, causes a lot of chaos that is resolved by morning. I want to stop here because there is something that I have been thinking about this issue; love potions are a recurring factor in fantasy stories, and maybe that means something. Maybe it is a hidden desire of having something that allows people to love someone no matter what cost, or having something that makes you desirable.  I know that “a magical love potion” does not exist and maybe that is a good thing, isn’t it? Think about it, would you really like to be tricked by somebody that makes you drink something that obliges you to “fall in love” with someone whom, in normal conditions, you haven’t even consider? It sounds a little creepy to me. I wouldn’t like to be like poor Demetrius who was in love with Hermia and suddenly ended up “in love” with Helena without any reason.

That’s my opinion, what about yours? If there were love potions somewhere, would you use them anyway? Feel free to share your opinions. Here is a song that maybe helps you to make a decision about it =)
I hope you have enjoyed my post, see you!

Love Potion Number Nine

The Clovers, The Searchers

I took my troubles down to Madame Rue
You know that gypsy with the gold-capped tooth
She's got a pad down on Thirty-Fourth and Vine
Sellin' little bottles of Love Potion Number Nine

I told her that I was a flop with chics
I've been this way since 1956
She looked at my palm and she made a magic sign
She said "What you need is Love Potion Number Nine"

She bent down and turned around and gave me a wink
She said "I'm gonna make it up right here in the sink"
It smelled like turpentine, it looked like Indian ink
I held my nose, I closed my eyes, I took a drink

I didn't know if it was day or night
I started kissin' everything in sight
But when I kissed a cop down on Thirty-Fourth and Vine
He broke my little bottle of Love Potion Number Nine

 ------ guitar solo ------

I held my nose, I closed my eyes, I took a drink

I didn't know if it was day or night
I started kissin' everything in sight
But when I kissed a cop down on Thirty-Fourth and Vine
He broke my little bottle of Love Potion Number Nine
 Love Potion Number Nine
 Love Potion Number Nine

 Love Potion Number Nine
